Not being able to retain employees probably signifies that you’re hiring the wrong ones. If people aren’t working out for you, you deserve to find candidates that will. However, the problem doesn’t necessarily relate to bad decisions in the hiring process – it could very well have something to do with your job description. Make sure you’re setting yourself up to draw in the right talent. A well written job description is half the battle.

1. Don’t Ramble

Think about what happens when someone puts a lengthy document in front of you, but you feel as though you have a pretty good idea of what it contains. Do you read the whole thing? Of course not. Your potential candidates are going to do the same thing. Job descriptions aren’t an employee manual – they’re just good insight about who you are as a company and what the job entails. They can find out the rest after you hire them.

2. It Shouldn’t Be Painful to Read

Who wants to work for a cold, detached, and impersonal company? Definitely not a talented employee. You should always be truthful in a job description, but you don’t have to phrase things like they’re orders. Since dry, lifeless descriptions aren’t enticing to anyone, it’s okay to occasionally be fun and highlight unique experiences your company provides.

3. Use the Right Keywords

If someone is looking to apply, they’re going to use Google to find the career they’re interested in. If your job description entirely lacks keywords that a talented employee would be looking for, it’s not likely they’ll find it. Outside of the job title, you’ll need to make sure the description contains enough relevant phrases, or perhaps similar job titles for people who search differently.

4. Add Other Media

Photos and short videos express more than words ever will. These videos should have less to do with the job itself and more to do with the culture of your company. If someone is seeking that position, they already know what it implies. On the other hand, what they do need to know is why they should work for you instead of a competing company that has an opening for the same position. Adding images and videos about your company gives people an idea of what they’re getting into, and they’ll know right off the bat whether or not they’ll thrive in that environment.

5. Only Post Polished Material

If your job description is riddled with typos, inaccurate or outdated information, or things that seem like outright lies, you’re not going to get anywhere. Talented employees aren’t new to the game, and these things will stand out to them immediately. The description needs to reflect your professionalism and standard of quality. If no one has bothered to proofread it, you’re giving a terrible first impression.

6. Make Yourself Stand Out

If you look at job descriptions for similar positions, you’re going to see they often overuse the same tired phrases over and over again. Everyone offers a fast paced environment, and is looking for highly motivated self-starters. Applicants see these terms and roll their eyes. Everyone uses them, and it’s becoming obnoxious. Talented applicants want to see a different attitude.

Writing a better job description involves breaking the mold. Lose the template, drop the redundant tricks and turns of phrase, and offer potential candidates something real. If they have a reason to respect you as an employer before they apply, they’re more likely to remain loyal when bringing their talents to your company.
"},"publishedOn":"2015-12-30T10:07:51.690Z"}},{"node":{"url":"7-career-skills-you-will-improve-when-travelling","title":"7 Career Skills You Will Improve When Travelling","description":{"description":"
If you've\r\never considered taking time out from your busy career to travel, whether for a\r\nweek or a year, you probably assumed that you would have to sacrifice your\r\nchances of improving those all important work skills that employers value.\r\nYou'll be happy to know that there are many valuable things that travel can\r\nteach you that will only enhance your career. You'll be happy to know that there are many valuable things that travel can teach you that will only enhance your career. Here's a list of 7 career skills that will only get better when you travel.

1. Time management

You won't be on the road for very long before you realize how critical time management skills are to travel. Plan poorly and you leave yourself with extended layovers and dead zones with nothing to do and nowhere to go. Or worse, poor time management could leave you running from place to place, perpetually late or even missing important connections.

2. Communication skills

Any seasoned traveller knows that learning how to communicate with people from cultures that are very different from your own and who speak languages that you may have never even heard of takes skill. Being misunderstood is incredibly easy if you aren't careful. It makes you a better listener and a more careful communicator in all of your interactions.

3. Visualization

When you travel you may end up having to orient yourself or find your way in a new place using nothing more than a few simple directions given to you by a local. If you're lucky, you'll have a map or a guidebook to work from. No matter what, you will have to rely on your ability to visualize.

4. Stress management

There are few things that we can do to completely cut stress out of our lives. Whether you are on the job or on the road, stress will go with you. It can be overwhelming and disorienting to be in a place that is completely new to you, which teaches you very quickly the value of handling stress in a healthy way.

5. Teamwork

Travelling with others is a great way to practice your skills as a team player. Even if you travel with just one other person, you still have to deal with all of their wants and idiosyncrasies. You have to figure out common goals and learn how to compromise so everyone gets to have an enjoyable experience.

6. Organization and planning

If your skills at organizing and planning projects are lacking on the job, the worst that can happen is that you find yourself out of a job. If planning and organization aren't your strong suits and you're on a round-the-world adventure, you could end up endangering your health, safety, your finances or well-being.

7. Adaptability

Travel presents one opportunity after another for you to strengthen your adaptability skills because things rarely ever go completely according to plan. Flights get delayed or cancelled, restaurants may not have the food you want, and that great hotel you booked online may look nothing like you expected. You learn very quickly on the road that if you hope to have any fun at all, you are better off learning how to roll with the punches rather than letting small disappointments ruin your entire day (or trip). Being adaptable and flexible can also help you with your stress management skills.

So, don't worry that taking time off from your career to enjoy life on the road will leave you at a loss when it comes to developing your work related skills. No matter where you go, you are always learning something useful.
"},"publishedOn":"2015-12-22T13:38:47.313Z"}},{"node":{"url":"how-to-make-job-interviews-less-stressful-for-candidates","title":"How to make job interviews less stressful for candidates","description":{"description":"
We all know interviewing for a job can be\r\nstressful and a source of anxiety for potential candidates. One of the best ways to lose good talent before hiring is to tank the interview on the employer’s side – by making candidates feel nervous and unwelcome. It may be completely unintentional on your part, but you need to remember they’re also deciding whether or not they want to work for you. Here are some good ways to make sure that your candidates are at ease when they come to interview, so that you can really see what they have to offer.

Make them feel welcome

Leaving a candidate in a bare waiting room is a great way to increase anxiety and turn them off to the work environment before they know anything more. Make sure the candidate is greeted with enthusiasm, and has any needs met. Offer a drink and show them where the restroom is if they need to wait for any length of time. If you have a flexible workspace, invite them to walk around to get a feel for the place for a few minutes. Whatever you do, try and schedule interviews in such a way that they aren’t face to face with their competition. Leave plenty of time for one candidate to leave before another may arrive.

Have a familiar face present

Before the interview, you’ll most likely have had previous contact with the jobseeker, either through an HR person or through your recruiting department; essentially someone who has had a few conversations with them, and has been the face of your company thus far. Invite that person along for the interview process, or at least have that person greet and introduce the candidate to the interviewers. Sending them in sight unseen to a group of strangers can seem a bit like facing a firing squad. Even if it’s just been telephone conversations, having a connection with someone will help them feel a little more at ease.

Don’t forget introductions

Have your familiar face introduce himself or herself in person, and then introduce everyone else in the room. Knowing who is asking you questions may help a candidate understand why they are being asked, and might make the process a bit less intimidating. Don’t just identify who you are, but explain how your position relates to the vacant position, and how you will be interacting with them if hired. This helps to clarify their own potential position within the company, and will answer some of the obvious questions about organizational structure and expectations.

Don’t dive in too quickly

Take a few minutes to talk to the candidate about the company, division, mission, and goals. This will allow the candidate a chance to relax and warm up to you, rather than feeling like they’re under attack. It helps to put them at ease while letting you get any points across. Small talk helps to emphasize your humanity, and gives you a chance to explain the interview process and what to expect.

Don’t try to trip them up

People tend to think of an interview as a test that needs to be passed, rather than a discussion to see if the candidate is a good fit for the company. Purposefully trying to stump the candidate does nothing but increase their anxiety, and limits the possibility that you’re going to get a good idea of their skills. This should not be an adversarial process, it should be a time for both of you to figure out whether or not they have the skills you need, and if you offer an environment where they can put their skills to work. Showing off your superior knowledge or trying to make them feel inadequate does nothing but make you look like a difficult employer to work with, and turns them off to the idea that yours is the place they want to be.

Sell your company

Remember, in today’s job market, the interview goes both ways. Don’t assume that they’re desperate to come work for you. Stay positive and enthusiastic, and make them feel as though they would want to come and work for you. It helps put them at ease because it indicates you are enthusiastic about the possibility of them coming to work for you. Helping them feel welcomed and wanted is going to have the biggest effect on letting you see their true strengths.
"},"publishedOn":"2015-12-09T11:08:10.617Z"}},{"node":{"url":"essential-skills-every-graduate-needs","title":"Essential Skills Every Graduate Needs","description":{"description":"
College\r\ncan be the absolute best years of a person’s life; full of fun, freedom and\r\nmeaningful learning that helps you on the way to getting the career that you\r\nhave always dreamed of. However, suddenly leaving\r\nthe comfort zone of college and being thrust in to the big wide world can often\r\nbe a daunting and scary time for new graduates. Though they may be equipped for\r\ncertain niche careers, they also need to have learnt and know how to apply a\r\nnumber of important practical life skills in order to be able to fully embrace\r\nand adjust to this new, fully-adult life. To help any graduate along, here are\r\nseven skills that everybody should have mastered before they leave college.

1. Time\r\nManagement

While at college, if you happened to oversleep and\r\nmiss a class, the worst that can happen is that you have to make up for the\r\nmissed learning another time. This isn’t the case in the working world, and if\r\nyou are late to your job then the likelihood is that you are going to be out of\r\nwork pretty quickly! In the last year of your college experience, make the\r\nserious effort to never be late for appointments; it will stand you in good\r\nstead for the transition.

2. Critical\r\nThinking

Gaining a grasp of critical thinking allows you to be\r\nmore creative in both the way that you learn and the way that you tackle\r\ndifferent problems in life. You never know what your life after graduation is\r\ngoing to throw at you, so consider taking a few philosophy classes to help open\r\nup your mind and be able to use more logic, more reason and see from more than\r\none perspective.

3. Public\r\nSpeaking

The idea of public speaking can be a seriously\r\ndaunting one for the shy students among us, but the more you work on your\r\n‘voice’ while in the comfort zone of college, the more confident and successful\r\nyou will be when it comes to applying this skill in the real world. Perhaps you\r\nhave a go at a few debate classes before you graduate. It will give you heaps\r\nof experience and momentum for occasions like important job interviews.

4. Research

No matter what major you are studying, there will\r\nalways be an element of research in your learning process. Fine tuning these\r\nresearch skills is a really important and distinguishing feature to be able to\r\nboast after you graduate, as a good research mind will always have a plan B for\r\na situation and will know how to begin tackling almost any problem.

5. Software\r\nSkills

It is a sign of the times that computer and software\r\nskills are more important to have than ever before. Almost all good graduate\r\njobs these days will involve a considerable amount of computer and online work,\r\nso the more proficient you are in these areas from the get go, the more\r\nsuccessful and fast moving your career will probably be.

6. Business\r\nWriting

Business writing or formal writing, is essential in\r\nthe post graduation phase, as you will probably be spending most of your time\r\ncomposing job applications and personal statements to various companies. The\r\nmore impressive your writing is, the more chance you will have at being noticed\r\nand asked for an interview.

7. Teamwork

Though you may have been able to get through college\r\nkeeping yourself to yourself and burying your head in your books, mastering\r\nteamwork is going to be an integral part of succeeding in the real world. The\r\nmajority of careers involve interaction and collaboration with others, and you\r\ncould be the smartest person in the room, but if your attitude remains somewhat\r\nselfish with regards to work, you will struggle to succeed.
"},"publishedOn":"2015-12-09T11:04:06.237Z"}},{"node":{"url":"10-smart-things-to-do-after-the-job-interview","title":"10 Smart Things to do after the Job Interview","description":{"description":"
Once your\r\ninterview is over, don’t think it’s completely over. You might be the very first candidate ever who took such\r\nan approach! If during the interview you learnt more about the company’s\r\nproblem and needs, try to promote yourself as a consultant rather than a job\r\napplicant. Make a proposal in which you clearly explain how you would solve the\r\ncompany’s issue. This would proof your passion and knowledge in order to make a\r\nreal contribution. \r\n\t
\t\r\n
5)In case you met more interview\r\npanel members, try to write each of them a personalised follow-up letter. Having\r\ncollected their individual business cards would have been a good idea to\r\naddress them by their name! This could be a further opportunity to mention important\r\nachievements or other relevant points which have not been discussed during the\r\ninterview. Think back at what your conversation was about and try to find out\r\nmore detailed information about the topics you discussed. If you don’t\r\ndo it, someone else will do it, it’s just a matter of time! What might be\r\nconsidered as ‘great’ today, might become ordinary and ‘standard’ tomorrow. If\r\nthat is the case, do you always know what further steps to take in order to\r\nkeep your leading position?

Imagine\r\nyou need to hire a person who has an outstanding creative mind. I’m thinking of\r\nsomeone who does ordinary things very differently, who is always in search of\r\ndifferentiation and knows exactly how to stand out from the crowd. The person\r\nneeds to be: curious, flexible, embrace change, look at things from different\r\nperspectives, come up with fresh solutions for tricky challenges, discover new\r\nopportunities that others don’t see, take the initiative and keen on making a\r\ndifference. When it comes to creative skills we need to distinguish: 1) the\r\nskill to design something very creatively in a visual way (e.g. a logo,\r\nwebsite, corporate brochure, product etc.) and 2) the skill of being able to\r\nsolve corporate problems in a creative way. How are you going to test and\r\nassess a candidate’s creative skills when it comes to “thinking outside the\r\nbox?”

Here\r\nare three ideas.

Idea 1 – The\r\ncreative CV.

Invite\r\npotential candidates to apply for the job with an original, creative CV. I’m\r\nnot talking of the standard hardcopy CV, but something truly eye-catching. No limits\r\nshould therefore be given with regard to the CV’s format and outlook. There\r\nhave been candidates who created their CV in form of a leaflet or infographic,\r\nor who printed their CV on a t-shirt or billboard, who produced an attention\r\ngrabbing video, etc. If the job position is in the creative industry, it would\r\nsurely give you a first impression about the candidate’s skillset. Bear in mind\r\nthat this approach would be less relevant for a position in other industries,\r\nsuch as the Finance or other sectors.

Idea 2 – Asking\r\ncompetency-based interview questions.

Once\r\ncandidates are being invited for an interview, ask them competency-based interview\r\nquestions with regard to their creative-thinking skills. Consider the\r\nfollowing:

\r\n
What was the last\r\ngreat idea that you came up with in your last job? Please specify a bit more in\r\ndetail.

What was the most\r\ncreative project that you ever completed in a team?

Can you describe a\r\nsituation in which you were able to think of a cost-cutting idea?

Do you consider\r\nyourself as an “out-of-the-box” person? Can you give me an example in which you\r\ncame up with a truly creative solution to your company’s problem? How did this\r\nbenefit your company?

How is your reaction\r\nif someone approaches you with a very unusual idea?

What creative\r\nthinking methods do you use in order to come up with great ideas or solutions?

When do you feel\r\nmost creative?

What would we have\r\nto provide you with, in order to get the most creativity out of you?

Idea 3 – Giving some\r\ncreative challenges.

Share\r\nwith your candidates a problem that the company is currently facing and let\r\nthem come up with an original solution. This will give them the opportunity to\r\nshow to what extent they are creative problem solvers. You could tackle this\r\ntask in different ways: 1) You tell them the problem in advance and they can\r\nprepare for it in their own time at home. Once they turn up to the interview,\r\nthey can present you their solution. 2) You tell them the problem during the\r\ninterview only. You wait and see how quickly they can think on their own feet\r\nin a creative way. 3) You invite them to a group assessment in which they need\r\nto come up with a great solution as a team. The disadvantage of this approach would\r\nobviously be that it would be more difficult to assess an individual’s\r\ncontribution. However, at the same time it allows you to test peoples’ team\r\nworking skills. 4) You give them two unrelated things and see with what new\r\nthings they are able to come up with.

Candidates\r\nshould be challenged in multiple ways, not just with one single task. The\r\nresult of one task might not truly reflect the real potential of a candidate.\r\nIt would be a more insightful and revealing experience for the Recruiter if\r\ncandidates would be exposed to various scenarios. The candidate who is able to\r\nimpress in all given challenges should be the real winner for the job. This\r\nwould make the hiring decision for the recruiter so much easier.

One\r\nmore time, nowadays it is not sufficient for a company to just have people\r\ndoing their jobs as expected. It takes creativity and innovation in order to\r\nbecome a true leader in any particular industry. The benefit of hiring creative\r\npeople is that they will help the company to reach newer heights and improve\r\nthe organisation’s bottom line dramatically, if opportunities are being\r\nprovided to think outside the box.
"},"publishedOn":"2015-09-25T12:08:03.530Z"}},{"node":{"url":"behaviour-based-interview-technique-benefits","title":"Behaviour-based Interview Technique: 14 Benefits you might not know about","description":{"description":"
Hiring\r\nManagers believe that past performance is the best indicator of future success.\r\nThe purpose of the behaviour-based interviewing technique is to assess\r\ncandidates in an accurate, fair and thorough way. A recruiter should apply the “STAR” approach\r\nby asking the candidate to describe: 1) the\r\nsituation in which the behaviour took place, 2) the task that\r\nneeded to be done, 3) the action the candidate took to address the\r\nsituation and the result of the action.

Let’s\r\nhave a closer look at the 14 benefits of using a behaviour-based interview technique.\r\n

# 1 – Easy implementation.

Once\r\nyou make a list of all the sample questions for each required job competency,\r\nit will be easy to implement.

# 2 – Accuracy.

Research\r\nhas shown that behaviour-based interviewing is considered more valid than other\r\ninterviewing methods. It is able to predict a candidate’s potential for success\r\nin a more accurate way.

# 3 – Well structured.

Questions\r\ncan be well organised and planned in advance. A more objective rating will be\r\npossible and it can make the whole process more efficient, consistent and\r\nreliable.

# 4 – Confidence.

If\r\nyou have an effective hiring process in place, it will give you more confidence\r\nin your ability to spot top talents and by making the right hiring decision.

# 5 – Factual basis.

If\r\nyou collect relevant data during the interview, you can make a smarter hiring\r\ndecision. You will not have to rely on your gut feelings, subjective\r\nimpressions or opinions.

# 6 – Relevance.

You\r\nwill focus only on those specific competencies that are relevant to the job.\r\nThis will prevent you from getting distracted or side-tracked by irrelevant\r\nskills or knowledge that the candidate might have.

# 7 – Preparation.

By\r\npreparing specific questions in advance it will allow you to control the\r\ndirection of the conversation. You will stay more focused and gain only the\r\ninformation you really need in order to make the right decision.

# 8 – Cost savings.

Since\r\nthis method is considered more valid, it will also reduce expensive turnover in\r\nthe long term.

# 9 – Better candidate fit.

By\r\nasking the right questions, you will hire a candidate who will be a great fit\r\nfor your team and company.

# 10 – Flexibility.

You\r\ncan determine how you want to proceed in the hiring process: what job\r\ncompetencies to highlight, what questions to ask, how to integrate this\r\nbehaviour-based interview technique with other hiring tools, e.g. assessments.

# 11 – Efficiency.

The\r\ntime that you will spend with candidates will be effective and focused. If you\r\ninclude also other panel members you will avoid asking overlapping questions.\r\nWhile you get more experienced in using this technique, your time for\r\npreparation will drastically decrease.

# 12 – Meeting easily legal guidelines.

You\r\nwill easily be able to meet legal guidelines for fair employment practices. You\r\nwill collect only information that is important to the job. Prejudices,\r\npreferences, assumptions or illegal interview biases are less likely to\r\ninfluence the hiring decision.

# 13 – Positive impressions.

The\r\nway you treat your candidates during the interview is crucial. It will\r\ndetermine how they talk to others about their experience at your organisation.\r\nBy using behaviour-based interviews your company will make positive impressions\r\non all job applicants.

# 14 – Fairness.

All\r\ncandidates will be asked the same questions and will be assessed against the\r\nsame set of job-related competencies. This means that they will be also rated\r\nusing the same method for an accurate, fair and consistent selection.

Bear\r\nin mind, even though a behaviour based interview technique is a good predictor\r\nof future behaviour, we need to formulate the questions correctly right from\r\nthe beginning. Otherwise we might risk of not getting the answers to the type\r\nof behaviour we want to measure.
"},"publishedOn":"2015-09-25T12:03:59.097Z"}}]}},"pageContext":{"skip":150,"limit":10,"pageNumber":16,"hasPrevPage":true,"prevPageLink":"/blog/15","hasNextPage":true,"nextPageLink":"/blog/17"}},
